Confirmation

Confirmation at SJC

CCC 1303: “The sacrament of Confirmation;…roots us more deeply as a son/daughter of Christ…increases the gifts of the Holy Spirit…bonds us with the Church more perfectly…grants us the spiritual strength to spread and defend the faith.”
Just as our physical bodies mature, our spiritual souls do the same. This beautiful sacrament is intimately tied to Baptism as it further perfects the graces received at Baptism. Confirmation seals our souls with the strength of the Holy Spirit.

**The Archdiocese of Chicago requires a two year period of sacramental preparation for children to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. This is traditionally done during grades 7 and 8.
(Of course there are exceptions, contact our office with special questions)

Timeline of Confirmation Prep

Grade 7

Rite of Acceptance:

At the beginning of 7th grade students come to Mass, receive a blessing from the Pastor and publicly profess their desire to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation. (Done as a large group, standing in the pews) This Rite usually is held in September each year.

Begin Classes:

With one of our Faith Formation Programs or at St. John of the Cross Parish School.

Begin Service Hours:

20 total hours to be completed by the end of 8th Grade. We have many service opportunities here at SJC but service can be conducted anywhere. It is important that you serve, not where you are serving!  For ideas on Service, please click on the Outreach Page.  There are options for serving at SJC and in our community.
